"Apothic"

Apothic’s self-titled debut album is anything but a first step for its members, who are seasoned veterans of the Minneapolis metal scene. The lineup includes Neal Pruett on bass, known for his work with Chalice of Suffering and live performances with Glutton for Punishment. Frontman Allan Towne, who previously held vocal duties with Glutton for Punishment and Mastiff, brings a raw power to Apothic’s brutal sound. Guitarist Nathan Pehler adds his skills honed from Glutton for Punishment and Diehardcorps, while Braeden Telstad (of Decomposer and Maniacal Force) rounds out the band’s relentless assault on drums. With their combined experience, Apothic delivers a potent mix of aggression and groove that’s bound to resonate.

This album is a relentless assault on the eardrums. The first half builds tension with layers of anger and rage, culminating in the self-titled track, which drags listeners into an abysmal pit of despair. From there, the album transitions into a heavily groove-oriented second half, maintaining its brutal intensity. Don’t expect any clean vocals—this is pure aggression, with breaks created only by shifting rhythms and melodic ideas that oscillate between grinding and grooving.

Each track is meticulously arranged, showcasing thoughtful composition throughout. Track 6, Dark Sky Sanctuary, is a standout. Its purpose is clear: after a sonic barrage of unyielding aggression, this track provides a momentary shift with deep bass melodies that create a subtle rumble, offering a needed pause from the intensity of the first half. It sets the stage perfectly for the climactic Perpetual Void, making the album feel like a complete, intentional journey.

Highly recommended for fans of: Belphegor and Cannibal Corpse. This is a must-listen if you’re into Glutton for Punishment or Mastiff. The album brings tech-death elements but grounds them in low-end heaviness and dark atmospheres, making it particularly resonant for fans of Cattle Decapitation, High on Fire, or even Archspire.
